Having the opportunity to attend the Eastern Europe Holocaust Remembrance trip has been a life-changing experience for me both personally and professionally. As a principal, there is nothing more important to me than allowing our students the opportunity to experience their studies first hand. To see the students interact and grapple with international travel, the gravity and harsh realities of the concentration camps, the contextual connections of museums and the cultures of four different countries was awe inspiring. For the students to be able to begin to scratch the surface in truly understanding the atrocities that took place during this period in our history and make connections to the atrocities still occurring in today’s society allowed me to see the critical nature of this trip. When all of this coalesced with the beauty of the relationships that were forged between students, as well as with me and the other chaperones, the trip provided a unique and powerful life experience that none of us will ever forget.
